The team of girls competing at the state level was comprised of 16 girls and included Rosemary O'Connor '10 , Brie Sherer '10, Milon Crawford '12, Kaitlyn Fries '11, Molly Laubernds '12, Amanda McGinnis '10 , Maeve McHugh '10 , Alex Miller '11, Kylie Powrie '13, Emme Reasoner '13, Nicola Reasoner '11, Alexa Resetar '13, Larissa Sambel '12, Kendall Young '13 and Divers Megan Davis ’10 and Sterling Keiser ’11.
One of the most exciting races of the day came at the very end of the meet. In the 400 freestyle relay, the team of Milon Crawford, Molly Laubernds, Alexa Resetar and Maeve McHugh were pitted against East Grand Rapids, with just a .01 second lead after prelims. The girls dug deep and came up with the grand finale win, finishing the race in 3:38.45 for the top prize in that event.
In addition to the first place 400 relay, both the 200 medley relay and the 200 Freestyle relay produced elite top eight finishes. Along with the relays there were seven individual top eight finishes. Senior Maeve McHugh took 2nd 100 back and 6th in the 200 free. Junior Alex Miller took 3rd in 100 fly, cutting more than five seconds from her seed time and establishing a new school record in that event. There was an unprecedented flurry of freshman presence in the top eight, with Emme Reasoner taking 8th in fly, Kylie Powrie taking 7th in 500 free and Alexa Resetar nabbing 8th in 200 IM and in the 500 free.
The team showed great depth with more girls scoring points for the aardvarks. Kylie Powrie, Molly Laubernds, Brie Sherer, Milon Crawford and Rosemary O’Connor 100 fly all contributed to the second place victory, showcasing the depth of the team’s talent.
It has also been a while since CK sent more than one diver to the state meet. Both seasoned state veteran Megan Davis and newcomer Sterling Keiser made the state cut. Davis made it through the preliminary round, but was nudged out of the competition in the semi-finals.
While East Grand Rapids took the state title, coaches Tony Kurth, Scott McHugh and Kai Robinson were thrilled with the performance that the team put in at this year’s state meet. The fast times, excellent dives, good sportsmanship and spirit that prevailed throughout the weekend was gratifying to all. The departing seniors will be missed. The have set a high standard for the underclassman who will step on the block next year, and they seem ready for the task.
