Ms. Katie Koestner to Speak About the Dangers of Date Rape
On Tuesday, November 29th, Ms. Katie Koestner will speak to Upper School students about date rape. Ms. Koestner is the first victim of date rape to speak-out nationally about her experience and she has made it her goal to increase awareness and prevention of date rape.
Ms. Koestner has appeared on the cover of TIME Magazine in June of 1991. HBO made a movie about her story in 1993 entitled, “No Visible Bruises: The Katie Koestner Story”. She has appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show, Geraldo, NBC Nightly News, CNBC Talk Live, Larry King Live, Good Morning America, Later Today, Entertainment Tonight, MTV, Italian TV, The Jane Whitney Show, Morton Downey Jr., and dozens of other programs. She has given interviews for the Washington Post, New York Times, Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times, Philadelphia Inquirer, Journal of Higher Education, and countless other national and regional publications.
Her appearance and press conference on Capitol Hill with Congressman Jim Ramstad helped encourage Congress, and later President Bush, to pass the Campus Sexual Assault Victim’s Bill of Rights into law in 1992. The US Department of Education asked Ms. Koestner to work with Tipper Gore and Bonnie Campbell in its initiative to help women at risk for sexual violence.
Ms. Koestner was the keynote speaker for both the East and West Coast 4th Annual Student Conferences on Campus Sexual Violence in 1995 and for the East Coast 8th Annual Student Conference in 1998. She has presented at the national conferences for the American Association of School Administrators (AASA), the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), and the National School Boards Association (NSBA).
