Horizons-Upward Bound’s mission, “preparing students with limited opportunity from the Detroit metropolitan area to enter and succeed in post-secondary education,” is our mantra. Your gift to HUB’s comprehensive endowment fund is the commitment we need to sustain the program for future generations.
Government funding is not guaranteed. In 2007, there was an effort to defund Upward Bound programs nationally. Given the very tentative circumstance of federal funding, HUB is determined to raise an endowment to sustain itself.
Our goal is to fully endow Horizons-Upward Bound and eliminate the need for the federal grant. We need to raise at least $10 million to create an endowment that when combined with HUB’s annual fund donations, will guarantee that a minimum of 200 students annually can participate in the program regardless of the availability of federal funds. Without this endowment, we continue to be dependent on the federal grant.
How can I help?By making a significant gift to the HUB Comprehensive Endowment Fund, you will join a network of supporters who ensure that this program will always be available for deserving students from the Detroit metropolitan area.
By contributing $100,000 to the endowment fund, you will support one student position in perpetuity in the program. The cost for one student per year is $5,000.
By sponsoring a three-year scholarship of $100,000, a HUB student can attend Cranbrook-Kingswood Upper School for his 10th, 11th and 12th grade years. HUB prefers a three-year scholarship, as once a student becomes a HUB Scholar, it is important that they have the opportunity to graduate from Cranbrook. A $600,000 contribution will endow the scholarship in perpetuity.
