CK Alum Pete Dawkins: Michigan’s Only Heisman Trophy Winner

The Heisman Trophy has been awarded to only one native Michigan resident since its inception in 1935, and that person is Cranbrook’s own alum Pete Dawkins.
Having graduated from Cranbrook in 1955, Dawkins was awarded the Heisman Trophy in 1958 for his success on the football field, playing for the United States Military Academy at West Point. His athletic career began at Cranbrook, where he played football as an All-League Quarterback and baseball as the team’s captain.

These accomplishments were recently celebrated by Cranbrook Schools, which acknowledged the 60th anniversary of his Heisman Trophy win by retiring his football jersey (number 19) at the beginning of the 2018 Friday Night Lights Homecoming Game.

It was a celebration marked with special meaning to Dawkins, who was met with enthusiasm and excitement by the Cranbrook community during the ceremony. “Coming out here makes me feel like I’m a young man again,” he told the CK football team and coaches during one of the practice sessions before the Homecoming game. “I have so many happy memories from this field. The opportunity to come back and spend time with you is a thrill for me."
