CK Football: Head Coach Rounds Out Successful Career

“It is time to pass the jersey on and make it a better team for the next group.”  —James Kerr, Legacy
After serving Cranbrook’s athletics department, faculty, and students for the past six years, Joe D’Angelo is stepping down from his position as head football coach. This tenure has provided him with “some of my most enjoyable and rewarding coaching experiences,” and are a wonderful way to round out his 37-year-long career as a football coach for various institutions.

Brought into the Cranbrook community to help reinvigorate the then-struggling football program, D’Angelo’s involvement has instilled a sense of community, determination, and success in the administration, coaches, and athletes. “We went from not knowing or believing we could win any games to expecting to win most games,” he said, recalling the support and encouragement from administrators, players, and parents that surround his efforts. “What I have learned and experienced in my six year tenure with Cranbrook is what makes it one of the premier prep schools in the country,” he said. “It is [Cranbrook’s] stability and continuity that evolves from the loyalty to its faculty and staff, and vice versa.”

It’s clear that this loyalty has paid off for the football program: this past season has been one of the best in Cranbrook’s history. “Ten wins and two losses, back-to-back Catholic League Championships, a first-ever MHSAA District Playoff winner, and a growing number of players offered college scholarships to participate in college football,” D’Angelo recited with pride. “A strong foundation has been laid.”

That foundation will be built upon by D’Angelo’s successor Scott Steward, who has served the football program as defensive coordinator and varsity football assistant multiple times since 2013. “Energetic, experienced, and knowledgeable,” Steward is “well-qualified to continue building the football program here at Cranbrook,” said D’Angelo, and is the perfect candidate to carry on Cranbrook’s successful football traditions.
