Week in Review: Great Accomplishments from CK Students!

It’s a great time to be a Crane! Cranbrook School has much to be proud of, in this vast assortment of exciting student and team accomplishments:

Ten members of the Debate Team traveled to Harvard to compete in the Public Forum debate on Saturday, February 17th and Sunday, February 18th. All participants performed admirably during the competition, with the varsity team performing a particularly impressive accomplishment. For the first time in CK Debate’s recent history, the varsity team broke through the preliminary rounds and advanced into the elimination rounds of the tournament! It was a great achievement for all team members, one they will be carrying forward into upcoming tournaments.

Two CK Orchestra students have made noteworthy accomplishments for their hard work and dedication to their instruments. Violinist Soyoung Cho, Slotkin Music Scholar and co-concertmaster of the CK Orchestra, has been selected to participate in the National Youth Orchestra (NYO), which is sponsored by Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute. Only 24 violinists are selected nationally to audition for a position in the NYO, and Cho is the first student from Michigan to be selected for participation. During the program, she will work with professional musicians from various American orchestras, and perform in full rehearsals, chamber music, private lessons, sectionals, and master classes.

Matthew Tan has recently won the Michigan Honors Composition Competition, for his submitted composition entitled Station 12. The composition was created in correlation with the 2017-18 community read novel Station 11 by Emily St. John Mandel. His music was performed by the Cranbrook String Quartet at the Michigan Music Conference, which took place in Grand Rapids on Saturday, January 27th.

The CK Robotics Teams have been taking the robotics world by storm, competing in the East Michigan Regional Tournament this past Saturday, February 18th. Due to the teams’ hard work and perseverance, Cranbrook brought home first place trophies for both the middle school and high school divisional tournaments! All of the upper school teams will be advancing to the State Tournament in Lansing this upcoming weekend, accompanied by two out of three middle school teams. Best of luck to all of our robotics champions!
