JV Cranes get stung by DCD YellowJackets in first loss of the season

Bill Hancock
For the third time in a row, the JV Cranes got off to a slow start; unfortunately for the young Cranes, DCD's YellowJackets exploded for a 20-point first quarter, while adding another 14 points in the second quarter. The Cranes came out refreshed after the halftime break and played a much better third quarter, trimming the 15-point halftime deficit to one point. Unfortunately, poor shot selection, weak rebound positioning, some mental lapses covering the wings, and an unusually anemic offensive output led to some exciting moments in the fourth quarter, but ultimately the comeback for the Cranes ended unsuccessfully. The Junior Cranes must bounce back for the second game in a back-to-back week. Thursday's opponents will be University Liggett.
Top scorers for the game included #10, Donovan Jackson (21 points) and #34, Stanley Abulu (11) for the YellowJackets. For the Cranes, Sam Hauxwell finished with 14, Jordan Roebuck 13 and Lucas Doran added 12. Roebuck led all Crane rebounders with 8, followed by Hauxwell with 5 and Purther with 4; Purther also led the team with 5 steals and 3 defensive tips. Other good news from the game included the Cranes causing 13 turnovers and shooting 71% from the charity stripe. Unfortunately, this didn't overcome the 9/32 (28%) shooting night from 2-point range, or the 7/26 (26.9%) shooting from 3-point range put up by the young Cranes. The boys expect to redeem themselves Thursday night by returning to a more focused, disciplined and productive execution of Coach Fortescue's game plan. Go Cranes! Aim High!!
