Bennett Reading Tuesday, September 19

The annual Elizabeth Bennett Reading will take place on Tuesday evening September 19 at the Cranbrook Library Reading Room, with refreshments and mingling starting at 6:30 and readings starting at 7.

Second-year Bennett grant recipient Eglee Rodriguez-Bravo will return for her second reading. She will treat the audience to two short essays that were the product of a summer workshop. One story will take us on a walk through the streets of Seville Spain, in search of a hidden venue to see Flamenco, the Spanish art form that combines music and dance. The other narrates her memories of accompanying her mother to the city market.

First-year grantee, Robert Greene, who has been a member of the science department at Cranbrook Kingswood for 35 years, will also read. He will also share two short stories. The first story delves into ways in which both a simple chess move and a subtle whitewater canoe maneuver guide a teacher to understand what is important. The second describes the way in which a glance at a street musician causes the author to look beyond appearances.

These stories are a sampling of the work that these two faculty members took on this summer as recipients of the Elizabeth Bennett Writing Grant, now in its 33rd year. The purpose of the grant is to provide deserving faculty members with opportunities to pursue personal writing projects. The grant is named for Kingswood English teacher Elizabeth Bennett. From 1936 to 1968 she inspired her Kingswood students with a reverence for the written word. For a sampling of Eglee's 2016 reading click here.
