Cranbrook Students Receive National Medals

Seven Cranbrook Kingswood students have each received a National Medal for their wide variety of creative works submitted to the 2017 National Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. This is the second year in a row that CK students have earned a total of seven medals, which is a record number of awards for this organization.

Since its foundation in 1923, The National Scholastic Art and Writing Awards are the largest and most long-standing recognition program for exceptionally creative students in grades 7 through 12. Schools throughout the United States, Canada, and American schools abroad submit over 150,000 works of student artwork and writing for evaluation by professionals, educators, and scholars of the fine arts.

National medalists represent less than 1% of NSAWA submissions. This year, more than 330,000 students submitted creative works to the organization, which makes these students’ achievements all the more stunning. Student who receive top awards are encouraged to attend the annual showcase of student submissions and works in New York City. Gold Medalists will have their works featured in the National Exhibition at Parsons School of Design at the New School and Pratt Institute’s Pratt Manhattan Gallery, which will be on display from June 2nd through June 12th.

The following students have the following respective awards:

Grace Li: Gold Medal, Drawing and Illustration
Cydnie Martin: Silver Medal, Fashion
Laura Roed: Silver Medal, Digital Art
Sam Slocum: Silver Medal, Art Portfolio
Sasta Sudhakaran: Silver Medal, Jewelry
Yifan You: Silver Medal, Mixed Media

In addition to the Gold Medal, Grace Li’s piece “Of the Same” was awarded the Gedenk Award for Tolerance. The award, which is spondored by the Gedenk Movement, is given to students who submit creative pieces that relate to increasing tolerance and compassion amongst different people to create a peaceful and compassionate society. The Gedenk Movement encourages people to reflect upon ways in which tolerance and education can be promoted.

Congratulations to these students for their tremendous achievements!
