High Scores Earned at 2017 MMPC Exam

61 Upper School students have participated in the Michigan Math Prize Competition (MMPC) this academic year, and a record number of them have received high scores for their accomplishments.

Sponsored by the Michigan Section of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA), the MMPC gives students across the state the chance to develop higher-level interest and ability in mathematics. The competition is a two-part exam. Part I features 40 multiple choice questions related to a variety of mathematic concepts and topics from Algebra to Pre-Calculus. Part II features five long-answer questions that require written justification for all answers the students provide.

The first half of the exam is open to all interested students, which amounted to almost 5,000 participants this year. 130 Cranbrook students attended this portion. Students who placed particularly well in Part I are as follows:
Roxanne Zhou (’17) and Dennis Ren (’19), 33 points; school-wide highest scores
Justin Applefield (’18) and Anthony Wang (’18), 31 points; highest scoring Junior students
Subashri Ramesh (’20), 27 points; 7th place schoolwide

Students who place in the top 1,000 scores for the first exam are invited to take Part II. In 2016, 46 students were invited to participate in Round 2 of the exam, but this year showed an increase to a whopping 61 students who qualified for the second portion. Cranbrook’s students were also greatly successful in this portion of the exam, with the following students earning places in the Top 100 High Scores:
Justin Applefield (’18)
Glen Pan (’19)
Dennis Ren (’19)
Roxanne Zhou (’17)

Students who earn the Top 100 High Scores are honored at an awards program, at which their final scores will be announced. The banquet is set for mid-March, so these students will be anxiously awaiting the news of their final scores until then!

Other students who placed very well are as follows:
Anthony Wang (’18), 101st place
Jason Ouyang (’19), 108th place
Alex Wu (’19), 122nd place
Jieming Li (’18), 133rd place
Subashri Ramesh (’20), 199th place

Many congratulations to all students who participated in this event!
