Susan Post
On Sunday, February 12 from 3-4:40 pm in the Community Room of the Bloomfield Hisorical Society at 1099 Lone Pine Road, alumna Ruth Ann Fruehauf '75 will speak as part of the Local History/Local Resources Program Series of the Bloomfield Historical Society.
As the granddaughter of August Fruehauf, a Detroit blacksmith and wagon builder who came up with the concept for the legendary Fruehauf semi-trailer, Fruehauf will relate the history of the legendary semi-trailers and the company that was founded in Detroit and employed 26,000 worldwide. Hear the story that began more than 100 years ago when her grandfather was asked to come up with a way to move a lumber baron’s sailboat up to Northern Michigan. His idea was to create a two-wheeled wagon to hold the boat – and then take the back seat out of a Model T in order to attach the wagon. They called the contraption a “trailer.” The rest, as they say, is history. Ruth Ann Fruehauf will relate this history she has captured in her book “Singing Wheels – The Fruehauf Trailer Story.”
