CK Research Club Makes Cranbrook History at the State and Regional Science Fair
CK Research Club performed outstandingly at the Science and Engineering Fair of Metro Detroit (SEFMD) and the Michigan Science and Engineering Fair (MSEF).
All five student participants placed in the regional fair and continued to compete in the state science fair where students won various professional awards.
Both science fairs took place in Cobo Hall in Detroit, Michigan on Wednesday, March 13th. High school students from across the state presented their research to experts and judges from various organizations.
Seniors Matthew Tan and Salena Prakah-Asante were both grand prize winners, qualifying for the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF). ISEF brings together nearly 1,800 students from across the world during the second week of May to present their research.
Junior Mark Chen placed first in his category for his project "Active Learning over DNN: Automated Engineering Design Optimization for Fluid Dynamics Based on Self-Simulated Dataset." Sophomore Saaim Khan placed second in his category for his project "Countering Mutative Genetic Variants in Sensorineural Hearing Loss."
Freshman Margaret Yang led a team with two additional high school students. Her team placed 2nd in their category for their project "Dual-precipitation Nano-structure Enhanced Cast Aluminum Alloy for Engine Applications."
In addition, several group members received professional awards from organizations like the American Statistical Association, the United States Air Force, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, and Mu Alpha Theta.
This group is first to receive such a large number of awards for their projects at SEFMD and MSEF. It is also the first time ever Cranbrook has had two students qualify for the Intel ISEF.
