CK Dance Student Recognized as Distinguished Scholar in Dance and Choreography
Junior Kali Hightower has been recognized as a Distinguished Scholar by the Michigan Youth Arts Festival (MYAF).
Her twelve years of training in a variety of dance styles—Afro Caribbean, ballet, contemporary, hip hop, jazz, liturgical, lyrical, modern, pointe, and tap—have included four years’ involvement in the Cranbrook Kingswood Dance program. As part of the Performing Arts curriculum, the dance program allows Middle and Upper School students to experience training in modern dance technique, composition, and performance. Participating students are also encouraged to present original compositions at the annual Strickland Choreography Competition, which is adjudicated by professional dance artists.

Kali’s involvement with the CK Dance program and the Strickland Choreography Competitions have been extremely successful, as she choreographed winning dances for the competitions in 2017 and 2018. More recently, she has been recognized as a Distinguished Scholar in Dance and Choreography by the MYAF for her self-choreographed solo piece “Lion.” She will repeat this performance at the final festival in May at Western Michigan University, an event that will bring together nearly 1,000 students across the state who will share their performing arts abilities.
