CK Debate Update: National Qualifying Tournament Champs and Academic All Americans!

CK Debate swept the competition at the National Speech and Debate Association (NSDA) National Qualifying Tournament, and four students have been awarded high honors by the NSDA.
The tournament took place at Wayne State University on Saturday, February 23rd. Competition was fierce during this event, as tournament winners are selected to represent Michigan at the 2019 National Speech & Debate Tournament this June in Dallas, Texas
.
Cranbrook’s teams dominated the “Public Forum Debate” category, going 11 - 2 in the preliminary rounds. From there, three CK teams successfully “closed out” the final round and earned “Top Three” spots—finishing in first, second, and third place.

Duo Lindsiann Shi and Hye-Jin Kang will be representing Michigan in the “Public Forum Debate” category during the national tournament. Representing Michigan in the “World School’s Debate” category will be Aashray Khanna, Justin Luo, Harry Ren, and Derrick Zhen.

Further congratulations go out to Khanna, Luo, Ren, and Zhen, as these four debaters have recently been named Academic All Americans by the NSDA. This is an honor only earned by one percent of student debaters, as they must hold a 3.5 GPA or higher, accumulate 750 tournament points or more, and display strong leadership skills and outstanding character. All four of these debaters can boast of these accomplishments, and they are the first-ever members of CK Debate to achieve this level of distinction from the NSDA.

Best of luck to the teams as they prepare to head to Texas in June—and congratulations to all of these hardworking debaters!
