The Perfect Chair

MSB 8th Graders look to design history to solve an engineering challenge.

Jennifer Dawson gave her 8th grade technology class an engineering and design challenge: build the perfect chair. Students traveled to Cranbrook Art Museum to look at and sketch examples of furniture in the Plaza Vault.

They then researched methods for making furniture out of found and recycled objects such as cardboard, cups, and old yoga mats. Students then sketched and built small models that eventually turned into large scale models. The chairs are on display in the MSB main lobby and some are pretty comfortable!
