The Summer Theatre School, our oldest summer program, presents classic theater skills like character acting, lighting, dance, voice, costuming, set design and other stage crafts. The Theatre School operates from Cranbrook's beautiful Greek Theater grove, an outstanding full sized stone replica of a classic outdoor Greek theater setting nestled in a mature pine forest. Evening outdoor theater productions attract ample crowds from neighboring communities.

In active use since its opening performance of A Cranbrook Masque in 1916, Cranbrook’s authentic outdoor Greek Theatre provides the location for classes, rehearsals and performances for the Junior Division of the Theatre School. The Greek Theatre has served as the focal point of Cranbrook Theatre School since the school’s beginning 72 years ago. St. Dunstan’s Playhouse offers a second stage, rehearsal space and administrative headquarters for the school. Other Cranbrook campus areas and alternative classrooms accommodate programs in inclement weather.
Cranbrook Theatre School seeks to help students develop:
- A sound foundation of skill and experience for further theatre study and participation.
- Useful personal skills of effective communication, perception, creativity, responsibility and teamwork.
- Awareness of the varied forms of theatre including dramatic literature.
- An understanding of the complete process of “putting on a play” to become more discerning and appreciative theatre audience members.
