Trooper Sanders, CK'91, Gives Fresh Perspective on Politics at Sirchio Lecture

Trooper Sanders, CK'91, spoke to a packed audience in the Kingswood Auditorium on Thursday.

After some opening remarks from Upper School English Instructor Jeffrey Welch, Caroline Shinkle, CK'11, introduced Sanders to the audience.

Sanders spoke not only about his experiences in politics but also how he traveled from Cranbrook to the White House. After his lecture, he engaged the audience in a Q&A session, during which he was asked a myriad of questions, including his thoughts on the war in Iraq, the most important issues for the next President, and his interpretation of the Constitution.

Sanders has served as a White House policy advisor for former Vice President Al Gore on subjects ranging from mental health and homelessness to school safety and crime.  He was also a Gore/Lieberman campaign observer at the 2000 Florida recount. He is at present a domestic policy advisor at the William J. Clinton Foundation in New York. Sanders is also involved in other organizations seeking to get out the vote and to respond to social problems.

A native of Detroit, Michigan, Sanders is a graduate of the University of Michigan and London School of Economics, has varying degrees of competence in German and French and has studied Arabic.

Inaugurated in 1993 by Kris Sirchio, C'83, the Sirchio lecture series brings a speaker to the campus each fall for an evening lecture open to the public and on the following day a schedule of interactions with students in all three divisions of the Schools. Past speakers have included Michael Barone C'62, Daniel Ellsberg C'48, Sven Birkerts C'69, Ward Just C'53, Natalie Zemon Davis K'45, Tod Williams C'61 and Billie Tsien, Rob Edwards C'81, Professor Ralph G. Williams, and Edmund White C'58.
