Robotics Advisor Wins Mentor of the Year Award
4/24/2012
Cranbrook Kingswood Robotics Club Advisor Betsy Lamb won the Mentor of the Year Award at the three-day 2012 VEX Robotics Competition World Championship in Anaheim, Calif.
This award was given to only two mentors worldwide. According to VEX Robotics, the Mentor of the Year is “a role model, a leader, and an extraordinary mentor who helps show students new ways to expand their knowledge and solve problems.” Robotics students wrote an essay to apply for the award and then were interviewed at the Finals by the judges.
True to Lamb’s mentoring success, Cranbrook’s five teams did well at this year’s VEX Robotics Competition World Championship. Of the 400 high school teams that qualified for the World Championship, two of Cranbrook’s teams placed in the top 100 – Team 35 took 16th place in the Math division, and Team 39 took 23rd place in the Science division. Team 37 placed in the top 200 teams after a close loss in the final round.
Team 36 won the Community Award, which is presented to a team that “demonstrates strong community building skills and has made many contributions to help support students and teams beyond their own school,” according to VEX Robotics. This award was given to only six teams out of the nearly 5,000 middle school, high school, and university teams at the competition.
Additionally, the teams that Cranbrook mentors did well in the Middle School division. Team 1636A from Highland Parks took 5th place, was a picking team, and made it to quarterfinals; Team 4540A from Youthville placed in the top 50 of the 140 Middle School teams that had qualified to attend.
