Cranes lose at Motor City Roundball Classic

TWAS TWO DAYS AFTER CHRISTMAS
(With apologies to Clement Clarke Moore)

Twas 2 days after Christmas, and all through the gym
The Cranbrook Cranes did assemble, right under the rim.
Their uniforms beamed bright, having been washed with much care
With their hopes that a victory soon would be there.

The team had been gathered, all snug in their shoes
Feeling sad for Detroit City, who surely would  lose
With Coach Finney in his sweats, and Coach Twedt at his side
The team had been readied, practicing hard, showing pride.

When out on the court, there arose such a clatter
The refs blew their whistle, the game started to matter
Away to the basket, the ball bounced through the air
Til the sphere hit the backboard, with nary a care

The score on the board continued to rise
Though down at first, the Cranes began to spring a surprise
When, what to my wondering eyes did appear
A score of Cranes 43, Detroit City 35, showing no fear

With a team that had talent, so lively and quick
Coach Finney had them focused, working the pick
As rapid as Cranes, the players they came.
Coach whistled, and scolded and called them by name

Now Morrow, now Bloomer, now Chapman and Hall
On David, and Rosen, come answer the call
Here’s Mogill, and Roed and don’t forget Miller
With the boards from McGlothin, this could be a thriller
There’s Liles, and mate Cha, backed by Orley and Moore
With shotmaking from Ahlborn, this could even the score.

And then, in a  twinkling, the clock counted it down
With the score tied at 50, its OT all around
Four minutes to go, what ever will be
Will the Cranes just continue to knock down the threes?

They spoke not a word, but went straight to their work
They continued to score, the crowd went berserk
The boys from Detroit City, they displayed such commitment
And the gap grew too large, for the CK contingent.

The Game  finally ended
With a score not as intended
The Crane’s efforts were strong, but just a bit late
Detroit City at 62, CK but 5 – 8

Coach sprang from his chair, clipboard at his side
Imploring the team, “Show some CK pride”
But I heard the Team roar, as the fans did depart
“Wait til next week,  when the Catholic League starts.”

Happy Holidays everyone, from the CK Cranes Boys Varsity Basketball Team!
