Cranbrook Schools HUB Program and Students Featured on Fox 2 News

Lohany Avila and Khalil Willams, two promising students through the Cranbrook Schools Horizons-Upward Bound (HUB) program, made Fox 2 News headlines for their academic commitments over this past summer. Both students were hand-selected to attend the program, giving them the chance to solidify the skills needed to make their college dreams a reality.

Coming to Cranbrook in 1965 through a grant from the Ford Foundation, the “Horizons” program flourished under the guidance of the Cranbrook Schools faculty. When the U.S. Department of Education started the nationwide "Upward Bound" program that same year, Cranbrook was able to apply for and later receive a federal Upward Bound Grant in 1966. The shared interests and prerogatives of both programs resulted in what became Cranbrook Schools Horizons-Upward Bound. HUB is aimed toward dedicated first-generation college students in the Detroit Public School system and boasts a graduation rate of over 90%, with 80% of participating students performing better on standardized tests such as the ACT.

The program has been a positive and rewarding experience for Avila and Williams, who both feel that they have developed stronger academic and leadership skills. “It has raised the bar,” Avila said. “My expectations are higher now. I know what to expect from myself. I know that I can do better than what I think if I push myself.”

Williams added, “I feel more of a leader than I ever have. People see hope in me. I feel really proud of myself with what they've made me become.”
