Cranbrook Schools Counselor Receives Steward Award from Michigan College Access Network

Dr. Patrick O’Connor, associate dean of college counseling for Cranbrook Schools, has been awarded the Steward Award from the Michigan College Access Network (MCAN) in recognition of his many contributions to increasing post-secondary schooling for students.

The award was presented at the sixth annual MCAN conference, which was held in Lansing on March 8th and 9th. College advocates from across the state were recognized at the College Access Impact Awards dinner, of which Dr. O’Connor was a part. Eight award categories recognized the hard work and dedication of 22 individuals and organizations that have gone above and beyond to improve postsecondary attainment.

Dr. O’Connor was selected as this year’s recipient of the Steward Award, which recognizes those who have dramatically contributed to increasing the skills, talent, and knowledge of college access professionals in Michigan. His leadership abilities and efforts to increase counselor education through MCAN’s counselor course and Reach Higher efforts on the local and nation level, as well as his advocacy for counselors’ regular pursuit of professional development, have all contributed to his recognition and recipient status.

“Every one of the individuals and organizations recognized from this year’s awards have played a vital role sparking change statewide and in their communities,” said Brandy Johnson, executive director of MCAN. “This year’s award-winners are a fantastic group of individuals and organizations who are on the ground and working to drive change by increasing the number of Michigan residents with postsecondary degrees and certificates in our state.”

The MCAN is invested in the professional development of individuals working in the college access field. By supporting a well-trained sector, MCAN aims to increase the number of students enrolling in, persisting through, and completing postsecondary education.

Many congratulations to Dr. O’Connor!
