Cranbrook Debate Team Wins Michigan State Championship

Twenty members of Cranbrook’s Varsity Debate Team became Michigan State Champions at the 2015-2016 Varsity Debate State Finals. The event was held at Albion College on Friday, January 8th and Saturday, January 9th.

Cranbrook entered the final round with the only undefeated teams in the championship. Debaters Maya Zriek and Sam Curran paired up to sweep through the semi-finals, defeating the strongest opposing teams and winning the state championship.

The Debate Team was also awarded the following speaking awards:
Maddie Fink, 1st Place Best Speaker in the State
Maya Zriek, 7th Place
Michael Bian, 9th Place
Konnie Lin, 10th Place

Winning the 1st Place Speaker award, as well as the Michigan State Champion trophy, is a tremendous honor and achievement. It was a fantastic weekend for the team.

In two weeks, Cranbrook will host the Michigan National Debate Tournament Qualifying Meet to select teams to travel to Salt Lake City in June for the national tournament. Cranbrook will also be sending twelve debaters to the national Harvard Tournament in February.

Congratulations to all team members and coaches, and best wishes for your continued success!
