Upper Schools Sophomore Awarded in New York Times Student Editorial Contest

Cranbrook Kingswood sophomore Grace Wang has been awarded a winner of the New York Times Second Annual Student Editorial Contest, earning a “Top Ten” spot out of nearly 5,000 student entries.

The contest, which is available to high school students across the globe, encourages young people to voice their opinions on important social and personal concerns through research and editorial writing. No topic is off-limits, allowing students to showcase their creativity and passion for their subject.

This year over 4,500 hundred entries were submitted to the New York Times. Winners were selected based upon the strength of the argument and writing, relevant use of research and sources, and conformity to formatting and contest guidelines. Most important was the students’ use of an original and engaging voice as they presented their arguments.

Wang’s article, “Poisonous Apples: China’s Plastic Surgery Revolution”, discusses the prevalence of plastic surgery in young girls and its relation to gender identity in China. The article can be read in full on the New York Times website here.

Congratulations to Grace Wang and her history teacher Elizabeth Ryan, for their hard work and insightful commentary!
