Cranbrook Schools Students Releasing the Hero Within

Thirty-six Cranbrook Kingswood Upper School students spent eight days on a service learning trip in the Dominican Republic partnering with EF Tours and the Outreach 360 Dare to Dream project.

In a small, rural northwest coastal town of Monte Cristi, Cranbrook students introduced basic English literacy to over 400 students grades PK-5th grade. The positive presence of Cranbrook students in the local community raised awareness of and interest in the value of education and literacy for the Outreach program.

The Dare to Dream project, established in 1989, focuses on bringing out the very best in Monte Cristi’s orphaned, abandoned, and disadvantaged children through raising literacy rates and self-confidence in every child.
Enrichment activities included interacting with the community in shopping, walking, dance classes, salt flat tours, and visits to a favorite Bon ice cream corner shop. It was a common and heartwarming occurrence to see families of 3 or 4 riding on a single motorbike with the small children waving and saying “hello teacher” to the Cranbrook students.

The trip was a wonderful opportunity for students to understand the lasting nature of meaningful service and the unmistakable experience of cultural immersion. With firsthand understanding of collaboration and motivation, these 36 student volunteers built a tremendous sense of leadership; something necessary to become true global citizens and make a difference in their own communities and beyond.
