The November giving spirit is a 22-year tradition for the varsity ice hockey boys, but 2014 marked the start of a new giving tradition for the JV team.

Together, the teams provided 40-plus strong bodies to help sort and organize food donations at Focus Hope in Detroit and at the Lighthouse in Pontiac. “The JV made boxes of Thanksgiving foods based on family size – say, four or five – and later they were able to give the boxes directly to needy families,” said boys JV coach Darin Egerer.

The varsity players stacked cans on pallets and sorted food donations in the warehouse. They finished off their morning working in the customer checkout area packing grocery boxes, Varsity Coach Andy Weidenbach explained.

Participating in community service projects fits with the CK athletic department’s goal of not only producing fine athletes but also building good character.

“There are a couple of important reasons why we choose to do community service work during the Thanksgiving break,” Weidenbach said. “First of all, it is a great team building experience. Secondly, and maybe most importantly, it’s part of their Cranbrook education. There is a history of giving back to the community in the CK hockey program. Whether it is donating time to a community service organization or supporting a local charity through a theme game, we feel it is important for the overall development of the players and their education.”
