Congratulations, class of 2014!
On Friday, June 6, 2014, the class of 2014 graduated in two packed ceremonies at Christ Church Cranbrook.
Although Cranbrook has no religious affiliation, it is customary to hold graduation at the church, originally a part of the Cranbrook community built by George and Ellen Booth. And although Cranbrook is co-educational in high school, it is also customary to graduate boys and girls in separate ceremonies: a tradition that survives from the days when they were educated separately.
Tim Westergren, class of 1984, delivered the address at the boys’ graduation. After years working as an award-winning composer and accomplished musician, Westergren launched the Music Genome Project in 2000, an entity that evolved soon after into Pandora, which provides personalized listening services for its online listeners. By creating algorithms that would help predict what music people would like based on their previous choices, Westergren set the stage for the type of digital personalization transforming media today. Today, Pandora is the most popular online radio service with more than 76 million people listening to 1.7 billion hours of music each month.
Elissa Slotkin, class of 1994, delivered the address for the girls’ graduation. As the United States’ Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs, Slotkin brought a unique perspective on world affairs back to Cranbrook Schools. In her current role, she oversees development and implementation of defense policy in the Middle East, Africa, Europe, Russia, and the Western Hemisphere.
