With her gentle bedside manner and remarkable wisdom in health education, Jean Smart was a cherished member of the Cranbrook Community.

During her 40 years at Brookside, Smart was in the midst of two wonderful relationships: one with the school and another with her husband and fellow faculty member, Harold Smart. Much like Hal, Jean Smart was an inspiration to hundreds of children, parents and colleagues.

As head of the Nutrition Committee, Smart ensured that snacks and lunch menus were nourishing for students. During each summer break, Smart served as director of the Kingswood Day Camp as well as co-director with her husband of the Elderhostel Program. Smart continually strived to improve her health education courses and Brookside as a whole.
