Christopher Martin
Christopher Martin arrived at Cranbrook in 1970 with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Harvard University and a Master of Arts degree from the University of North Carolina.

During his career, Martin gained adoration as a member of the English department as well as the varsity baseball head coach. Six of his 11 squads won the conference championship.

Born Jan. 27, 1940, in Lawrenceville, New Jersey, Martin was remembered by many for his black, thick-rimmed glasses and his difficult, yet rewarding teaching style.

Boy would I love to spend another semester back with Chris Martin reading....well, anything. If he was tough on high school kids, imagine his presence in an ordinary suburban book group. I think of his upstairs aerie classroom with great, great fondness.

Mr. Martin is one of the biggest reason I graduated from Cranbrook. He was my teacher, coach, advisor and worked in the dorm. When he talked, I listened. The lessons he taught me were life lessons. His brutal honesty, humor, and intellect were qualities I remember today. Thank you Mr. Martin!!

As namesakes, I've always felt a special connection with Mr. Martin. But beyond that, he improved my writing more than any other. Not that I ever achieved the "Dickensian-style" he once (and only once) comparied an essay of mine to. The time and care he took in reviewing/correcting/improving my papers were unsurpassed. Plus, he was just a very nice man. Thanks Mr Martin.

"This pop quiz is dedicated to all of you who have decided to rely upon Mr. Cliff and his notes" is only one of many memories of Mr. Martin at Cranbrook. His scathing dry wit and exceptional intellect are driven by sharp perception. He was the best english teacher I ever had, but more importantly a mentor without equal whose wisdom and sense of loyalty remain with me still.

Chris Martin remains the best teacher that I've encountered.
